Ozark Resident Katelyn Barnes attends London Summer Olympics

2012 Jul 27

Katelyn Barnes of Ozark (65721) left July 12 to attend the 2012 Olympic Games after spending three weeks in Europe tracing the history of the Olympics from ancient times to today with the Harding Olympic Tour.

As part of the tour, Barnes, a junior early childhood education with a teacher licensure major, spent time in Greece, Italy, Germany and England gaining hands-on experience and learning about the culture surrounding the Olympic games. In Athens, students received lessons from Greek coaches in the 2004 Olympic stadium on track and field techniques both ancient and modern. Next, the group traveled to Rome to learn about gladiatorial combat and Circus Maximus events that took place there, and then to Munich to learn about the history of more modern games. Currently, the group is spending time in London for the 2012 Summer Olympics and will be attending games such as beach volleyball, swimming and soccer.

Twenty students and faculty are part of this program and will return on Aug. 4. Students will also have the opportunity to travel independently in Europe before returning to the United States.

With an enrollment of more than 7,100 students, Harding is the largest private university in Arkansas and attracts more National Merit Scholars than any other private university in the state. Harding also maintains campuses in Australia, Chile, England, France, Greece and Zambia. For more information visit www.harding.edu/international.
