Briana Lopez of Memphis to attend 2013 presidential inauguration

2013 Jan 16

Briana Lopez of Memphis is one of nine students to travel to D.C. for the 2013 presidential inauguration on Jan. 21.

Dr. Linda Thompson, director of the McNair Scholars Program at Harding, will be taking the students to D.C. This will be the second time that Thompson has taken students to the inauguration.

"It's a great cultural and civic experience," Thompson said. "It's an adventure and opportunity to see history in the making."

Lopez, a participant in the program, is a senior spanish and leadership and ministry major. The McNair program provides students with research opportunities to help them achieve graduate awards. All McNair scholars are first generation college students that come from underrepresented societies.

The McNair program and the office of student services will provide funds. The Arkansas Martin Luther King Commission is sponsoring and organizing the trip.

Harding is the largest private university in Arkansas with 6,815 students and attracts more National Merit Scholars than any other private university in the state. Harding also maintains campuses in Australia, Chile, England, France, Greece, Italy and Zambia.
